Abstract
  • Water resources, agricultural production, and electric power generation are all interdependent. It is therefore necessary to understand how decisions and resources disruptions in these distinct sectors impact overall system sustainability, both now and in the future. A significant, current effort in this area is a project led by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and funded by the National Science Foundation. The aim of this large, multi-institutional project is to design an integrated, open source computational model for the California water-power-agriculture system. This model is will be used to discover key vulnerabilities and tradeoffs across sectors and thus aid utilities and government officials in designing a robust and resilient water-power-agriculture system. This thesis will focus on further developing this model and using it to understand power-generating vulnerabilities on the CAISO and WECC power system. The primary objectives are: 1) to use stochastic time series and power system modeling techniques to study the impacts of the Western US wind-hydrological extremes on CAISO electricity supply and prices; and 2) to examine the sensitivity of the CAISO market to potential changes in spatial/temporal covariance structures and seasonality of wind and hydro. Ultimately, modeling these disruptions will help system planners across multiple sectors incorporate risks from extreme events in short term operations and long-term planning.
